Western Cape – Karoo Region

where

No exact definition of what constitutes the Karoo is available, so its extent is also not precisely defined. The Karoo is partly defined by its topography, geology and climate.  The Karoo region is located to the north-east of Cape Town.  The camp sites listed for this region fall within the Western Cape.

Climate

Low rainfall, arid air, cloudless skies, and extremes of heat and cold are characteristic of this region.

History

The Karoo formed an almost impenetrable barrier to the interior from Cape Town, and the early adventurers, explorers, hunters, and travelers denounced it as a frightening place of great heat, great frosts, great floods, and great droughts.

ecology

The Karoo is a semidesert natural region of South Africa.  Ground water is found throughout the Karoo, which can be tapped by boreholes, making permanent settlements and sheep farming possible.

The vegetation consists of aloes, crassulas, euphorbias, , and various other desert plants.  The vegatation becomes very sparse going northwards.  The driest region of the Karoo, however, is its southwestern corner, between the Great Escarpment and the Cederberg-Skurweberg mountain ranges.  This area is  called the Tankwa Karoo,  The eastern and north-eastern Karoo are often covered by large patches of grassland. The typical Karoo vegetation used to support large game. Today, sheep thrive in this area.
