The Breede River Valley region lies to the north-east of Cape Town. The region is loosely located along the valley of its namesake, the Breeds River. It is a relatively flat region surrounded by Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges. It can easily accessed via the N1 or N2 freeway. travel time to this region is approximately 2 hours.
When coming via the N1 freeway, you will find the R60, which is the main thoroughfare through the Breede River Valley . This is a tarred road that comes off the N1 freeway and runs north-east to Robertson and Bonnievale. and then southwards to Swellendam. After Ashton, the R62 will take you through the mountains to Montagu. The area can also be access with the R317, which joins the N2 freeway at Stormsriver.
Once the Breede River leaves its source in the Matroosberg mountains, it winds its way through steep mountains. The muntains that encircle the river form part of the Cape Fold Belt, which become very evident when driving through to Montagu. The area is rich in floral diversity with many protea and restio species.
Summers can be very hot, usually averaging 30ºC from December to March, but sometimes peaking near 40ºC during the hottest of days. During winter however, the valley is often colder than other seaward regions. Snow is a regular occurrence on the surrounding mountains but does not fall on the valley floor, although light frost does occasionally occur. Spring and Autumn are transitional periods of variable rainfall, occasional light snow on the highest peaks and mild temperatures.
Towns and cities
Robertson, known as the town of wine and roses, is the largest town within this region. There are smaller towns dotted along the edge of the river, including Bonnievale, Ashton and McGregor. Once you have riven along the R62 through the mountains, you will arrive in the town of Montagu, which is a popular holiday destination due to the hot springs that are located here.
