Kwazulu Natal - West
The province of Kwazulu Natal is known as "the garden province". It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long coastline on the Indian Ocean . The province shares its borders with three other provinces and three countries. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its most populated city if Durban.
The northern boundary of this region is the provincial border with the Free State province. To the west is the national border with Lesotho and the the provincial boundary with the Eastern Cape respectively. The N2 freeway forms the boundary to the south. On the eastern side, the N3 freeway separates this region from the rest of the province.
The main geological feature of this region are the magnificent Maloti - Drakensberg mountains. These mountains rise an impressive 3000 metres above sea level and solid basalt walls rise upwards. Although this is mainly a mountainous region, the area contains a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. A substantial part of this area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The national park of uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is located in this region, as well as the Maloti-Drakensberg Park.
Due to the high rainfall in this area, there are many mountain streams and rivers. The Drakensberg mountains are the source of the Orange River (the longest river in southern Africa) and the Tugela River. These fast flowing streams give rise to spectacular waterfalls, including the world's second highest waterfall, the Tugela Falls.

The most popular activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding bird watching and just exploring the breath-taking scenery. Alternatively, if you're feeling more adventurous, you can try your hand at hot air ballooning, mountaineering, abseiling or trail running.
