Kwazulu Natal - North
The province of Kwazulu Natal is known as "the garden province". It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long coastline on the Indian Ocean . The province shares its borders with three other provinces and three countries. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its most populated city if Durban.
The northern boundary of this region is located on the border with Mozambique and Eswatini. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the east and the N2 freeway to the west. The region, which is essentially a triangle, ends at the town of Richards Bay.
The northern Lebombo Mountains rise to the north of the region. This relatively low mountain range of ancient granite extend into Eswatini. This part of the province contains rich areas of biodiversity of a range of flora and fauna. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is located here. This wetland area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it contains wetlands of international importance. A plethora of migratory bird species find their homes in these wetlands.
