Gauteng – South

Gauteng South

The province of Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa.  However, it is the economic hub of the country.  It has the highest population density of all the provinces in South Africa. It is surrounded by the provinces of the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.  Gauteng is the only landlocked province that does not have an international border.

Gauteng derived it's name from the Sotho word 'gauta', meaning 'gold'  This name was used as the basis for the naming of this province.  The name aptly describes the area's history of gold mining, which still continues to this day.

Cities and Towns

The province is dominated by the two largest cities in the country.  Johannesburg is the major economic powerhouse of the country.  Pretoria is the administrative capital of the country.  The towns of Centurion and Midrand lie between these two cities.

North vs South

There are no specific boundaries within Gauteng.  For the purposes of the web page, we have separated the region onto a southern and a northern region.  An imaginary line was drawn between the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.  The cities and towns in the southern region include:

  • Johannesburg
  • Magaliesberg
  • Vereeniging
  • Vanderbijlpark
  • Krugersdorp
  • Heidelberg

The area falls within the Highveld Biome.  This biome is identifiable by large open grasslands.  The Orange River forms the boundary to the south.  The higher lying escarpment region forms the border of the province to the north.  There is still extensive agriculture to the west, south and east of the province.

Most of the main national transport routes bisect this province, including the national roads of the N1, N3, N12 and N14 .This has allowed the province to become a major economic and transport hub in the country.
