Free State - East
The Free State Province lies in the centre of South Africa. It’s capital city is Bloemfontein, which is also the judicial capital of the country.
The area is characterised by flat grassy plains and pastureland, interspersed with the occasional hill or koppie. The rich soil and pleasant climate have allowed this province to become a thriving agricultural hub. There are more than 30,000 farms located here and they produce over 70% of the country’s grain. No wonder this region has been termed the ‘breadbasket’ of the country. The Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains are located in the east of the province.
Mineral deposits of gold and diamonds in the northern and western regions are plentiful here. Farming and tourism are the two major industries. The flat plains of the southern region provide ideal conditions for plains game like wildebeest and springbok, while the ridges and koppies of the northern section are home to kudu, red hartebeest and white rhino.
The map of the Free State province has been divided into three sections for ease of reference.
The eastern section extends from the N1 freeway eastwards to the border with Kwazulu Natal and Lesotho. The N8 freeway from Bloemfontein to Lesotho forms the southern border of this area.
what to expect
The eastern region of the Free State is a unique area in that it is a complete contrast to the rest of the province. Here, rolling hills and endless plains give way to towering mountains and dense forest. This region is dominated geologically by the Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park offers visitors over 11,000 hectares of uninhabited highland habitat. Here nature and wildlife take over. This area is home to black wildebeest, eland, springbok, Burchell’s zebra, the rear bearded vulture and bald ibis. This is a nature and hiking enthusiasts dream vacation. The town of Clarens is a very popular destination here and is definitely worth a visit.
In contract, the valleys here are densely vegetated, offering a break from the stark landscape of the mountains. Hiking trails abound here and should be on any hiking enthusiasts destination list.
And, when travelling through this area in November, do make a point of stopping in Ficksburg for the famous cherry festival.
