Eastern Cape – Ukhahlamba

The area to the north of the Eastern Cape borders onto the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains.  This area forms part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg  region, and although the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park falls within the Kwazulu-Natal province, we have maintained this name for the area within the Eastern Cape for ease of reference.   This area and the southern portion of the Drakensberg mountains form the boundary between the Eastern Cape and Lesotho.

The area is characterized by towering sandstone cliffs, spectacular vistas, peaks and hidden valleys.  This area has become a premier eco-tourism destination.  The area is relatively small, so there are few sites that cater to campers.  However, the campsites listed here fall outside the busy and popular Drakensberg retreats and are therefore off the beaten track.

The area is rich in wild life due to its diverse range of habitats.  There are a variety of rare and endangered animals and plants that are unique and endemic to this area.

The towns included in this listing are Lady Grey, Barkly East, Matatiele, Maclear and Swartberg.
