Eastern Cape – Greater Addo Region

Greater Addo Region, as it's name implies, has the magnificent Addo Elephant Park at it's heart.  The area not only includes the park, but extends towards the Zuurberg mountain range in the west, towards the Indian Ocean in the east and the Wild Coast to the north.  The area is also home to many other game and nature reserves.

The region has very diverse ecological areas.  These include the rugged mountain ranges and deep valleys of the Zuurberg mountains, which extend towards the Karoo biosphere;  woodlands and forest areas; sandy beaches, estuaries and river mouths.

There are a variety of towns and villages in this area. There are quaint inland towns like Kirkwood, Hankey and Loerie.  Extending along the Indian Ocean, you will find the surfers mecca of Jeffrey's Bay on the coast. Heading northwards along the coast you will reach the large city of Port Elizabeth and finally ending at the smaller coastal town of Port Alfred.

This area is malaria free. This region is a sanctuary for wildlife and visitors are able to view all of the Big Seven – lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard, southern right whales and the great white shark as well as many other species.

Culture and History

The area also has a rich cultural background and the National Art Festival is held annually in Grahamstown for a two week period from the end of June to the beginning of July.  The area is also the biggest citrus producing area in South Africa.

But the greatest attraction for the area by far is the Addo Elephant Park and should be included on every traveler's itinerary.
