Kruger National Park - North - Shingwedzi
Shingwedzi Bush Camp is located in the northern region of the Kruger National Park. The camp is easiest accessed from the Punda Maria Gate in the far north of the Park. Driving south along the main road for 70 kms, you will find the turn-off to the camp on your right. After another 2kms, you will arrive at the camp. The trip from the Punda Maria Gate to the camp site will take approximately 1h35m, assuming there are no stops on the way to admire the wildlife.
The road to the Punda Maria Gate and then on to Shingwedzi camp is all tarred. The roads within the camp are paved.
There are a total 50 sites at this camp. 26 stands are located along the fence, while the other 34 sites are located in the middle of the camp site. This is the only camp site in the Kruger National Park where you are able to book a camp site along the fence before your arrival. There is an additional cost involved when booking these sites, but the benefits far outweigh the costs
Sites along the fence are smaller than the other sites, and people camp right on top of their neighbors. However, having an uninterrupted view of the surrounding area is a small price to pay. The middle sites are larger and and the extra space is noticeable, even when the camp is fully booked.
The camp site is is dotted with giant mopane trees, allowing for some shade on the sites. The sites all consist of sand and compacted soil..
Electrical boxes with 4 plug points are scattered throughout the camp site. Some boxes are located close to the stands, while for others you will need to bring an extra long extension cord to reach them. Sometimes it is necessary to lay the cord across the roadway, so make sure to keep an eye on them for any breakages when cars drive over them.
There are no lights at this camp site, but there are lights at the ablution facilities and at all the communal facilities..
There are three ablutions facilities at the camp site. Two are located on either end of the campsite, while, the other is located towards the middle of the campsite on the opposite side of the road, close to the chalets. There are facilities for the disabled. The bathrooms are all tiled throughout with neat slate around the basins. There are mirrors against the wall. The showers are a bit on the tight side, and you will need to stand in the middle of the cubicle in order to close the door. Toilet paper is supplied, but can run out quickly.
Hot water is supplied to the bathroom from electric geysers, which means that there is hot water on demand. During busy times though, the hot water can become scarce.
There is are taps located in the communal kitchen areas..
Bins are located in the communal kitchen areas.
There are three communal kitchens located towards the back of the camp sites. Two are on either side of the camp sites, while one is located towards the middle. They are square and typical of all the kitchens in the Park. There is a laundry with coin-operated washing machines and dryers, located close to one of the bathrooms.
Braais are of the fixed steel variety which have swing-out grids. However, there are also a few loose-standing braais available, which can be moved closer to the camp site. Wood can be purchased at the on-site shop.
Special mention needs to be made of the pool at Shengwedzi. This pool is particularly big and a welcome respite from the heat of the day. As soon as the sun sets, the pool is illuminated by a large spotlight, which means everybody can enjoy an evening dip. Swimming is permitted until 9 pm.
