Klein Tafelberg

Western Cape - West Coast - Between Redelinghuys and Aurora

Location
Klein Tafelberg campsite is located to the north of Cape Town in the Sandveld area between Redelinghuys and Aurora.  The campsite is located approximately 190 kms from Cape Town and the drive will take you approximately 2h15m.  Access is from the N7 and then on to the R399  towards and through the town Aurora.  After the town, the road becomes dirt for the following 17,5 kms, then turn left.  After another 2,5kms, the gate to the camp site will be on your left.

Road conditions
The N7 and the R399 are tarred up until Aurora.  After the town of Aurora, the road becomes dirt and can be quite tricky.  Driving a SUV would be advisable. However, please be aware that the road condition deteriorates dramatically once you enter the farm gates.  You will need to deflate your tyres just to get to the camp site (a clear sign that you are entering 44 territory)

Stands
The camp site has 17 stands arranged beneath large Rooikrans trees.   All the sites have plenty of shade, but no grass to speak of.  The ground is a mixture of sand and compacted soil.  make sure to bring your heavy mallet.

Electricity
Each site has its own electricity connections.

Ablutions
There is a communal ablution facility for all the campsites.  The ablutions are very pretty. There are toilets, basins and showers.  The hot water to the bathrooms is supplied by gas geysers, so there is ample hot water to go around.  The ablutions are always kept neat and clean.

Braais
There is a large, round communal stone braai pit in the communal lapa.  You will need to bring your own braai grid to burn your meat here.  If you would prefer to braai at your campsite, I suggest you bring your own portable braai with you.  Wood can be purchased from the owner.

Bins
Bins are provided on the campsites.

Washing up
There is a washing up area at the communal lapa.

On site
Klein Tafelberg is home to one of, if not the best, 4x4 trail in the Cape.  Here you will definitely find out how capable your vehicle is in all offload conditions.  Definitely worth an attempt.  Stephen, the owner will be available throughout to help you out should the need arise.
There is a lovely stone "Veldpool" for cooling off after a long day's driving.
There is a large communal lapa with a pit braai and tables and chairs.
The campsite was set up mainly for the 4x4 enthusiasts and are therefore not luxurious.

Comments
We visited this campsite a number of years ago to attempt the 4x4 course.  This course is definitely the highlight of the adventure as it really put our Jeep through its paces, from thick sand through some serious rock climbing.  At the end of the day, the communal lapa was a great place to congregate and swap war stories over a large bonfire and a glass of wine.  It was also fabulous to go for a dip in the pool and enjoy a hot shower.  We were so exhausted at the end of the day that we hardly gave the sparce camp site much attention, but were just very happy to rest our weary heads.  We were camping with friends that time and the husband snored so loudly that my poor kids thought the campsite was being invaded by lions lol.  Such great memories.
